Duc An Ancient House is located at 129 Tran Phu Street - the center of Hoi An Ancient Town - Hoi An City - Quang Nam Province. The work was built recently 190 years ago - during the reign of King Minh Mang of the Nguyen Dynasty in 1830. The house left by the great-grandfather of the Phan family for his descendants was made from the road of worship. So far, 8 generations have been born and raised in this house.

Duc An ancient house has a tubular structure like most houses in Hoi An ancient town. The house has a frontage of 7m wide, in the past 70m long - the front faces the shopping street, the back borders the river; But now the house is only 40m in front facing Tran Phu street. In front of the house, there is a layout for the door in the middle, on both sides are two windows for business, above the door there are two eyes, a very typical detail of Hoi An ancient houses.

The word "Duc An" - the name of the house means "keeping morality for peace". Duc An is also the name of the bookstore founded by the third ancestor in this place from the end of the 19th century. This is a unique bookstore, specializing in selling Han Nom books and stationery of Quang Nam province. During this time, French resistance patriots such as Huynh Thuc Khang, Phan Chu Trinh, Tran Quy Cap... often frequented to buy and read books with progressive ideas. In the early years of the twentieth century, when the patriotic movement against the French took place throughout Quang Nam province and the whole country, Duc An's house continued to become a place to popularize progressive books and poetry to spread patriotism. to the people and the intelligentsia. Photo: A sign with the words "Duc An Hieu" is solemnly placed in the lobby above the entrance.

In 1908, the anti-tax movement taking place in Quang Nam and the central provinces failed. The Hue court was persecuted, the leaders were exiled to Con Dao, and Tran Quy Cap was executed in Khanh Hoa. Duc An bookstore temporarily stopped operating and switched to selling traditional medicines. Here, outside the house, there is still a drug store of the old years.

Passing through the pavilion used for commerce is the next one used as a living room, and as a place of worship. At the entrance, there is a signboard with 3 words "Phan Tong Duong" (From the street of the Phan family). In 1923, Duc An's house once again became a meeting place for young patriotic intellectuals, many progressive books and newspapers were still hidden and kept here. In October 1927, the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Organization Hoi An was established at Duc An's house and was the forerunner of the later Hoi An Communist Party.

Not only is it a revolutionary address, Duc An's house is also proud to give birth to the patriot Cao Hong Lanh. He was born in 1906, real name is Phan Hai Tham, alias Nam More; He is the fourth youngest child in the family. It was he who chaired the meeting to establish the Hoi An Revolutionary Youth Organization in October 1927. His whole life he followed the revolution through the long wars of the nation's resistance, holding many positions in the Party and State. He died in 2008 in Hanoi. Cao Hong Lanh is the pride of the Phan family in Hoi An. Photo: Space to commemorate revolutionary Cao Hong Lanh. Above is a four-letter plate with the word "Bieu Ly Son Ha" (an idiom in Ta Truyen, meaning that there are high mountains inside, deep rivers outside, forming natural ramparts).

Duc An ancient house has Vietnamese architectural style, often seen by urban residents near the sea and river in the early 19th century. In general, Duc An's old house is a townhouse, a tube house; However, the wooden house frame system is according to the ruong house style in the Central region. Surrounding the frame system is a brick wall, the roof is covered with yin and yang tiles. From front to back there are many layers, alternating between the architectural blocks are courtyards to get light and ventilation. Photo: The three-word diadem "My Hoan Luan" - meaning tall, beautiful and magnificent architecture.

The wooden frame system of the front house has a structure of "stacking - imitation" and "roof stacking pillars" evenly spreading the bearing capacity and expanding the space. This frame system has a large bearing capacity from the load of the yin and yang tile system.

The middle house - a place for family activities - also has a stacking system, but it is two overlapping roofs, the upper roof overlaps the lower roof, pulling to the back to form a large floor connected to the backyard. This is a unique type of house that remains in Hoi An: "roofs on top of roofs, hiding from floors", because in the old days in feudalism, commoners were not allowed to build tall houses in front, and houses had to be lower than palanquins; Do not build high-rise buildings with floors.

Connecting the layers of houses is a bridge next to the courtyard. This is a place to rest, entertain, play chess, read books, drink wine... The interconnected spaces without separate doors create visual openness, solving ventilation and lighting problems well.

The yard is always sunny and windy.

Duc An ancient house still retains a lot of furniture, antiques and books. The interior layout is reminiscent of a bygone era.

The upstairs is adjacent to the inner courtyard.

Wooden stairs upstairs in the back house. This is the family's private living space.

Mr. Phan Ngoc Tram, the current owner of Duc An ancient house, who is the 6th generation descendant of this house, said: Although there are floods every year here and has undergone several restorations, Duc An ancient house still keep almost intact the cultural values left by the forefathers. Moreover, this place is also a historical relic, marking the land and people of Hoi An.
